Performance Manager

It is with regret that the Board announces that Don McKenzie will be leaving Scottish Fencing at the end of May due to redundancy.  Don has supported many of our athletes onto the British Fencing performance pathway including Katie Smith, Chloe Dickson, Kate Daykin and Jess Corby over the nine years in the post, working with the Scottish Institute of Sport to ensure our athletes made best use of the support provided by them.  He has supported many Scottish Fencing teams at Five-Nation matches and Senior and Junior Commonwealth Championships.

Don joined Scottish Fencing on a 12-month contract as Talent Manager and his role has developed over time. Recently he has been instrumental in establishing the Scottish Fencing Academy (SFA) performance training days and summer camp; additionally, he has worked closely with the Youth Weapon Co-ordinators who help to support the development of our younger talent.

One of Don’s last tasks before he leaves is to ensure the SFA Summer Camp is organised, with coaches announced and arrangements finalised. The camp is returning to the newly renovated Inverclyde National Sports Training Centre in Largs and Don will make sure that the staff are ready to welcome Scottish Fencing’s contingent in July.

We know that the Scottish fencing community will join the Board in thanking Don for his hard work during his nine-year appointment and will continue to find ways to make use of his knowledge and skills.
