2017 SF AGM - election of President and Directors

Three Director Vacancies

As our President Chris Hyde, has come to the end of his cycle on the Board, he is standing down and we wish to elect a new President.  Chris had led the organisation very successfully across his two terms, rebrandiing it, building the staffing and funding of the organisation, staging successful Commonwealth Championships and constantly improving the quality of the Scottish Open.

President

The main roles of the President are:

  • Chair of the Board, ensuring our governance standards are high and we are all working towards the agreed Strategic Plan
  • Figurehead for external contacts, including Sport Scotland and British Fencing
  • Line management of the CEO

Two Directors

Directors take responsibility for a portfolio of one or more areas on the Board.  It may be you have specific interest or expertise where you feel you can add particular value.  Thus when new people join we always look to use the talents people bring to the Board and juggle the portfolios accordingly.

Les O’Donnell who will stand down from the Board at the AGM, was responsible for Welfare and Safeguarding.  We are delighted to say Les will continue to work with Scottish Fencing as the Safe Guarding and Wellbeing Advisor to the Board.  Thus ensuring our excellent reputation in this area, which Les has created through her work with Sport Scotland will be maintained.  While this will become part of a Directors portfolio, they will have an excellent Advisor to draw support from.

Roy Clarke stood down in November and his portfolio was Performance.  Roy has done a lot of good work to move forward the way we plan and support performance activities within Scottish Fencing.

Other portfolios we are considering as we move forward with our strategic plan include, Communications and Club Development.

Who we are looking for?

We wish to attract enthusiastic individuals who feel they can gain from being part of a Board and who are willing to give some time each month.  Boards meet in person, in Edinburgh every two months and by conference call in alternate months.  If you live outwith the central belt you can always dial in.

People who are willing to accept accountability for a portfolio, developing ideas to improve our members experience, encouraging people to become members and to enjoy participating in fencing as a competitor, social fencer, or volunteer

People who are willing to learn through the training and contacts offered by Sport Scotland

Who are willing to share their knowledge within the Board and contribute to the often lively debate

We are interested to hear from people who are not currently members of Scottish fencing as well as those who are.

We are very keen to increase the diversity of those on the Board and would encourage applications from all sections of society
