Welcome to the new Scottish Fencing website!

Why a New Site?

Well, first of all, we’d like to acknowledge that the old site actually did a lot of things very well.  Many thanks to Alex Winchester who first designed the old site and to Stephen D’Agostino who maintained it for the last 3 years.

The goals of the new site were …

  • to provide a more professional and branded appearance for Scottish Fencing,
  • to make maintenance of multiple strands of content much easier.

We think that we have achieved the first point with the new homepage and graphic design. The second point is achieved through the use of a modern ‘content management system’ which allows the management of entire portions of the site to be delegated to different individuals. This should allow us to provide a better and more regular flow of news and content. Of course, beyond these core goals we hope we’ve managed to deliver a few other improvements like a well-organised menu structure making it easy for you to find what you’re looking for and a few new pages as described above.

Who Built It?

The site was built by a team of Scottish Fencing volunteers – Keith Davidson, Robert Anderson and Stephen D’Agostino, lead by Conrad Chin, and supported by a professional designer Katherine Scott (website). We’re delighted that we’ve been able to build what we think is a very professional site for a tiny budget. Thanks are due to the whole team, but especially to Keith for the many hours of work he put into implementing the site and fixing the various problems that inevitably arise in such projects.

What’s New?

The most obvious change is that the new site has a new graphic design which we hope you like. The homepage is all new, and will contain a variety of feature articles depending on what is happening from time to time. We have an expanded About Us section, including a page with pictures and bios of the  Scottish Fencing board which we will shortly expand to include all of Scottish Fencing’s executives.  There’s a new About Fencing section – this is brief since there are many other sources of introductory information on fencing, but we felt it only right that our website has some information.  The main information on the website comes in the form of news articles (like the old site) which are categorised into various types. You can see the latest news of any kind in the News section, or pick one of the more specific categories under News, Coaching, and Referees & Volunteers.   We have also included new sections on areas of fencing that were not covered before such as Student Fencing and Wheelchair Fencing.

Points to note

There’s plenty to explore so please have a look round. A few pointers if you’re here for the first time:

  • Most news articles from the old site for the last 6 months or so have been transferred to this site and should be available under the appropriate section in News
  • If you can’t find what you’re looking for you can always use the SEARCH box at the top right of every page
  • If all else fails, we will keep a frozen copy of the old site available for a while – it can be reached from the Previous News link under the News menu item
  • If you think there’s something important that we’ve failed to transfer from the old site, please do let us know!

We of course hope you will enjoy it, but we also hope that it might inspire you to contribute the valuable content all websites need.  If you’d like to be involved or think you can help us in any way, please get in touch.
