2018 The Highland Open Fencing Tournament - Results

Elgin High School was the venue for the UK’s most northerly open fencing tournament last weekend (29 & 30 September) when over 80 competitors from places as far afield as Portland, Oregon, New York, Orkney and Cardiff competed for the Highland Open Men’s, Women’s Foil, Epee and Sabre titles.

It was the sixth time that the competition has been held in Elgin and the first time at the new Elgin High School.

Robin Paterson, Head Coach at Elgin Duellist Fencing Club and organiser of the annual fencing tournament, said “the first class facilities in the sports complex provided a wonderful environment for the fencers representing 22 clubs, including our very own Elgin Duellist Fencing Club”.

On the Saturday, Robert Blackburne (Dunblane Fencing Club) demonstrated his point control and agility on the piste, which has previously enabled him to secure a third place in his native New Zealand National Finals, in beating Hugh Kernohan (Culloden Fencing Club) 15-7. Hugh had himself previously competed in the Seoul Olympic Games in 1988.

For the second year in a row, the Women’s Epee Final was won by Miriam Figge (Edinburgh Fencing Club) who beat Katrina Dungay (West Fife FC), 15-11.

In the Men’s Sabre, Stephen Ferguson (Salle Ossian) beat Keith Davidson (Glasgow West End Fencing Club), with some perfectly timed stop cuts to the wrist. In the Women’s Sabre event, Ariana Serafinceanu (Strathallan Fencing Club) beat Kirsty Urquhart (Culloden Fencing Club).

On the Sunday, all medals in the Men’s Foil went to Salle Holyrood (Edinburgh). In the final, Northern Ireland team member Alastair Johnston came from behind to beat last year’s winner Charlie Broughton in a nail biting bout to win 15-13. Charlie will have an opportunity to make good his revenge when both compete at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Canberra, Australia later on this year. The Women’s Foil was also fought between fellow club members, this time from Stirling University with Chloe Campbell beating Nenah Verkaik 15-6.

Elgin Duellist Fencing Club also had a record 9 club members ranging in age from 13 to 48 taking part in this year’s open.

In the Men’s Epee, fellow club coach Callum Sutherland (20), from Elgin, secured the best result for the Club during the weekend by winning a bronze in a very tough field of competitors. Top junior fencer Oran McKenna (16) from Hopeman came 10 and Jon Goulding (48) form Forres came 21 in this weapon category.

In the Men’s Sabre, Oliver Harrison (16) from Elgin and Nathan Goureau (13) from Forres came 6th and 7th respectively. Nathan then went on to win the secondary sabre competition. Excellent results from both boys.

In the Women’s Foil competition, Hopeman’s Fleur Hamelin-Stewart (35) improved on her performance last year by securing 9th place. In the Men’s Foil Category, Callum Sutherland secured 7th place with outstanding performances from Casper Hawkins (16) from Forres who came 9th and Sean Saul (20) from Lossiemouth who secured 10th place in his first Highland Open Competition. Robin Paterson (48) from Elgin was placed 12th and Oliver Harrison and Jon Goulding secured a respectable 15th and 17th places respectively.

Robin added, “my fellow Elgin Duellist Club coaches Alex Keddie and Callum Sutherland are delighted with these results and that our members took the opportunity to compete at this high level.

During the weekend, we were also pleased to be able to host a Scottish Fencing Coaching workshop. Many of our members took part in developing their coaching skills and I am delighted that, subject to passing the written assessment, Lindsay Cant (23) and Fleur Hamelin-Stewart (35) passed their Level 1 coach award. This was another terrific success for the Club”.
