2019 Challenge Wratislavia - proposals

Competing at Challenge Wratislavia has been a highlight for many of our younger fencers. It is an inspirational tournament. It is challenging but not beyond many of our younger fencers which makes it an ideal first step to competing outside of the UK.

Friendships made on this trip are a legacy that bonds future Scottish Fencing teams and it is great to see how young people develop during the trip.

It is a fantastic event but over the years it has grown beyond the capacity for Scottish Fencing to manage with the resources available. And this is why we are conducting a review.

Our proposals are:

  • To provide squad training for all U15 fencers with the primary aim of preparing them for becoming performance athletes,
  • To only take a squad of three per weapon (maximum),
  • To only take a squad of U15 fencers,
  • To change qualification to reduce the number of events fencers compete in,
  • To recruit a Team Manager to assist the planning of squad training, and
  • To recruit a Fundraiser with the task of seeking funds for the package of training, competitions and travel

We want the squad trip to be a final step – something to aim for when fencers are ready to travel without adult supervision.

We have found over the last few years that for many of the younger fencers we are booking travel for parents or parents are anxious about sending their fencers without them being there. This has added to the administration of the event. Plus we have found that U13 and U11s require a greater level of supervision and we need to increase the number of chaperones which adds to the cost. For these reasons we feel that U13 and U11 fencers should travel with parents if they wish to compete.

Selection Tournaments

Proposed selection competitions are:

  • Scottish Youth Championships
  • One Leon Paul Junior Series (any)
  • Best of two out of three Youth Development Series events

We will calculate ranking as below:

u13's who will be U15's next season                        Multiplier of 1.25

u15's who will be u15's next season                        Multiplier of 1.5

If 2018/19 season                                                  Multiplier of 1.5

Criteria for selection

Fencers must compete at the Scottish Youth Championships in June and attend two open squad sessions in the new year. (2019).

Selection is the top three in the rankings for each weapon on the day after the third YDS of the season.

Scottish Fencing will only use discretionary places in the event of injury. In these situations the third ranked fencer would drop out.

If anyone in the top three does not take up their place, their place goes to the next ranked fencer 4th, 5th and so on.

Scottish Fencing is keen to hear the views of parents, coaches and fencers. If you have not already spoken to Ross Morrison (Director responsible for Development) please contact him on development@scottish-fencing.com by noon 21 May with your comments and suggestions.
