Mike O'Donnell

On Board Since:
August 2010

Key Responsibilities: I currently look after the policy and events remits on The Board and if you attend any of the SF events through the year it will be me that you see running around trying to co-ordinate everything. Please do come and say hello, you will find me approachable!

Background: Having been introduced to fencing “late in life” through my children, in the last 10 years I have been increasingly involved in grass roots fencing in Scotland. Currently I am a Level 2 foil coach and give a number of lessons per week to young people at West Fife Fencing Club (WFFC).

I have made numerous trips to both Scottish, GB and International competitions throughout Europe as I accompanied my son and daughter. I have also accompanied a number of GB squads (but not in any official capacity).

Although I am the Chairman of West Fife Fencing Club, I would be careful that my two roles would not compete against each other and would take all measures to excuse myself from Board decisions where there is a conflict of interest.

In my position as a “newcomer” to the sport, I believe that I will be able to help Scottish Fencing decide upon and deliver a clear vision that will help SF grow its membership and deliver better services to its members. The sport of fencing has provided many opportunities to my children (and also myself) and I believe that this brilliant sport should be shared amongst as many people as possible to give them the benefits of the it also.

Given my journey as a non/fencer then parent and then coach and being heavily involved in local fencing delivery, I would hope that my personal experience and all round overview of the sport would hopefully help me to improve communication at grassroots level, encouraging all ages and abilities to access the sport.
